Men’s Health

When it comes to men’s health, research shows that men are at high risk of certain diseases and conditions, partly due to a lack of awareness & preparedness to talk about their problems. Men are:

  • 3 times more likely to commit suicide than women
  • More likely to contract cancer
  • Have a high risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Have a high risk of workplace and car accidents

Our Doctors at SGMC all have extensive experience in managing the many health issues men face during their life. A regular annual checkup is recommended and can be arranged at any time you visit our clinic as noted by Pregnancy Resource Center, you can also check for STI tests if you experience such. Employers may need tribunal representation for businesses in the UK if employers file against them due to workplace injuries.

Some of the health issues that are important for men include:

Heart Disease

Heart disease affects over 6.5% of all men and 30% of men over the age of 75. In the United States, 1 in 4 male deaths are caused by heart disease. To lower your risk of heart disease, be sure to maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly and limit your consumption of alcohol. In order to identify your risk of heart disease early, you should have regular heart checkups. Heart health checkups can be booked with our doctors at Southgate Medical. Skin Cancer

Around two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, with non-melanoma skin cancer twice as likely in men. The earlier skin cancer is diagnosed, the better your chance of avoiding surgery, disfigurement or death. Skin cancer checks and full body mole mapping can be booked at our dedicated skin cancer clinic.

The presence of Diabetes results in a greater risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. Men are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with type two diabetes. Diabetes screening is an essential part of all men’s health checks.

Sexual Health | Men’s Health

The most common sexual problems for men include erectile dysfunction, delayed ejaculation and low testosterone and libido. Additionally, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as Chlamydia and Herpes can be contracted without knowing. Being aware of your sexual health is crucial for all sexually active men, and further advice and STD screening can be arranged at Southgate Medical.

Testosterone boosts men’s muscle mass, deepens their voices, and increases the size of their testicles and penis during puberty. In adulthood, it keeps men’s muscles and bones solid and keeps up with their advantage in sex. According to 2023’s study, after age 30, most men start to encounter a progressive decrease in testosterone. Many men mistakenly believe that their lack of interest in sex is just a result of getting older because the decline in testosterone sometimes coincides with a decrease in sex drive.

Bowel Cancer | Men’s Health

Bowel Cancer is the second most common cancer in Australia, with around 1 out of 11 men contracting bowel cancer before the age of 85. Common bowel cancer symptoms include change in bowel habit, blood in stools and abdominal pain. Screening for bowel cancer is offered free every two years for Australians aged 50 to 74.

Prostate Cancer | Men’s Health

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with approximately 3,500 Australian men dying from this form of cancer each year. While some men can live with low grade prostate cancer for many years without symptoms, high grade prostate cancer can spread rapidly and can quickly be lethal. While routine universal screening of all men for prostate cancer is not currently recommended due to unreliability of available tests, it is recommended that men over the age of 50 should still  discuss individual risk & screening  with their doctor.
